Cochin. India

Monday 28th September – Yesterday was a day of rest as I had developed a very sore throat and cough so thought it better to take it easy and keep out of everyone’s way. Spent most of the day in my cabin sleeping or reading – did not want to miss going off shore in Cochin. Today I was still not feeling 100% and had developed a cough however off we went as soon as we arrived. Hired a couple of Tuk Tuks and drivers after taking a ferry ride across the harbour – very nice young boys – who took us off for the day. It was very interesting and included visiting the Catholic Cathedral, the first church built in India, the outside of a Hindu Temple, Wholesale Spice market, Ginger market, place making essential oils, Chinese fishing nets, Dutch Palace and had a lovely meal of fish done in a typical Indian way at a local restaurant. As well the tour included visiting a number of emporiums selling silks, silk products, jewellery and carpets. We were very impressed with the carpets and would have been interested in buying a large mat if we knew what colour we wanted. We have loved India and the people, with the exception of all the vendors wanting to sell you something. Talked to a number of young boys, though, who were studying hard and selling on the street to pay for their education. The driving is crazy and the poverty noticeable but did not feel overwhelmed by crowds of people as we thought we’d be.
