Malaysia & Singapore

Thursday 1st October – Our holiday is fast coming to an end – here we are into October already! I still feel a little below par with quite a bad hacking cough and it is good that we have had three days at sea to rest and relax. Have attended a few lectures but mainly have just rested catching up on my reading. Want to be OK to make the most of Phuket tomorrow. Had my hair cut again on Tuesday – miss my normal hairdresser though! Have been to dinner in the dining room each evening and a show afterwards, then early to bed. Yesterday all the people who have done the complete trip had their photo taken on the deck – about 1,000 of us!!
Saturday 3rd October – Yesterday we were in Phuket and hired a minivan with 6 other people for four hours and just drove around and looked at the sights before returning to the ship early in the afternoon. One side of the island is full of modern resorts just like many other places in the world although the beaches are lovely – quite a heavy surf while we were there. Visited a Buddist temple which was impressive and called in to see the elephants but did not go on an elephant trek. Today we were in Langkawi, Malaysia and got a small minivan for the four of us - gave us a bit more flexibility to stop when we wanted. We went on a boat up the river to a fish farm then on to watch the eagles being fed and after that explored the bat caves – they !were interesting but sinister!! Mason and Glen did some scouting around for materials for the boat they are going to build and we waited on the pier while Mason carried two large bits of plywood on board plus a saw, nail gun and glue!! The competition is heating up and spies are everywhere – don’t the men get carried away!!! Should be fun though!
Sunday 4th October – This morning we berthed at Port Kelang and we decided not to travel the 1.5 hours to Kuala Lumpur - I was still not feeling so well and decided to start the course of antibiotics I had bought with me. Instead, we caught a ferry to Crab Island and it was a very interesting day – no cars and very poor conditions – all the houses are built on stilts and the smell and rubbish was overpowering at times made worse by the fact that the tide was out while we were there. It has been quite strange, in the most impoverished places, the people appear happy and smiling! Maybe we have too much and too high expectations! Generally we were impressed with Malaysia and the infrastructure in place – the terminal and landing facilities were one of the best we have been in.
Monday 5th October – Arrived in Singapore early this morning and were here till 8pm. Did not get off until about 10am then bought a day ticket for the MRT and went out to Chinatown and little India after which I went off to find some software I wanted and last minute shopping while Mason, Glen and Alice went to the end of the line and did a bit of sightseeing and exploring – I had done all that on previous visits with Helen & Bob. The metro system is fantastic and so easy to get around the city and cheap too – wish we had the same in NZ. Our last port of call before Darwin, then Sydney and home. Only 11 days to go – it will be good to have some nice relaxing days at sea – am feeling much better today, so, glad I started the A/Bs.
