Sea Days

Tuesday 15th September – Today was a nice relaxing day at sea after a busy schedule of ports and lots of walking in extreme heat. We had a Piracy Drill routine this morning where our part was to go to our cabins and stay as far away from any windows as possible – apart from checking on us I don’t really know what the exercise entailed for the crew. We are now sailing in the Red Sea and early Thursday morning will be heading into the Gulf of Aden where all the trouble with Pirates has been. We understand that an Australian Destroyer is in the vicinity so hope they are able to keep an eye on us. Choir practice again and we were told we have a showcase in the Atrium on Friday at lunchtime – don’t think we are terribly well prepared for this as have not had many days to learn quite complicated harmonies. Dinner and bed as the clocks go forward another hour during the night.
Wednesday 16th September – Into the routine again and up for a swim at 6.45am – managed 80 lengths so was quite pleased with myself. Did half an hour of aqua jogging as well so hope I can do the same each sea day. Was very warm again today 30 degrees and surprisingly the sea is 32 degrees! Sat out on the deck for an hour and a half before lunch reading – a little breezy which was warm but didn’t find it too hot. During the course of the morning they tried out the water cannons – seems that’s our defence against the Pirates!! Typed a letter for Glen re the terrible car we hired in Cyprus, then to lunch in the dining room, after choir practice, for a change. Won $10 in the Casino and watched the Blackjack tournament in the afternoon as well as sat out on the deck again to read after changing my books at the library. Dinner then a show, this time a female and male vocalist who were both very good.
Thursday 17th September – My very busy day started at 6.30pm where I managed to swim 100 lengths of the pool (you’d be proud of me, Karyn) then showered and spoke to Auntie Delia and Uncle Dave on Skype. It was their 60th Wedding Anniversary and I had arranged with Brian to talk to them so hope they were pleased to hear from me – I was two and a half and their flowergirl and the only one of their wedding party still alive (apart from them of course) so sorry not to be at their special dinner tomorrow night. Also spoke to Amanda and Peter in Oman and looking forward to seeing them on Sunday. It was breakfast after that then on to a lecture on Islam – very interesting. Time for a coffee with Mason, Glen and Alice then off to my first photo editing computer course followed by choir practice, lunch, a movie (“International”) very good- a quick change then the Captains Circle cocktail party and dinner and show – the same artists as last night. You can see that life at sea is not boring!!!! Tomorrow we are performing a showcase in the Atrium at lunchtime – have not had that many days to prepare so hope it goes well.

  1. Hi Maree, been having fun following your blog we are wondering about the drying conditions in the room for washing. Does the elastic line work well and how do you attach it? Keep up the good work and looking forward to hearing more about your adventures. Helps the countdown until our trip next year. Regards Patricia and Ted

  2. Elastic line works really well - put it in the shower (attach by suction) with the other one until most of the water is out then accross the window.
